It was after 1.30 pm on Tuesday when an impressive helicopter approached King Fahd's ostentatious palace on the Golden Mile. This and the presence of several National Police officers carrying machine guns at nearby crossroads were the clues as to the royal passenger arriving in Marbella. First of all the aircraft did a reconnaissance circuit around the area, then disappeared between the leafy trees that shade the royal residence from curious sightseers, and finally landed at the palace's own heliport.
King Juan Carlos had taken a break from his holiday at the Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca for a few hours for a private, courtesy visit to the Saudi Arabian monarch. But it was not just a diplomatic lunch as the two kings are close personal friends and their meeting lasted four hours.
"Is that the King of Spain's helicopter?", asked several curious onlookers on hearing the thunderous noise from the blades. This is not the first time that the King has visited Fahd, 82, in his Marbella palace as he paid the Saudi monarch a visit three years ago. Protocol demands that it should be the other way round and that the guest should visit the host monarch, but an exception is made in King Fahd's case due to his poor health.
